Obituary for Dorothy Neiger "Dot" Carter

Dorothy Neiger Carter

Loving wife, devoted mother, adored grandmother, and friend. Dorothy "Dot" Carter, 84, passed away on January 24, 2021 at Season’s Hospice, Christiana Care, after a short illness.

Dorothy was born January 7, 1937 in Scranton, PA to Jessie and Alvin Neiger. As a child, her family moved to Wilmington, DE where she attended public schools, including Wilmington High School, from which she graduated in 1954. In junior high, Dorothy befriended her future husband, Richard “Dick’ Carter. They married on Valentine’s Day 1956, and together, they had four children.

Dorothy was an active member of the Elsmere Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, having served as a deacon and member of the church choir. A numbers whiz, she retired in 2000 from Delaware Technical & Community College’s Business Office after many years of service. Dorothy’s favorite pastimes were reading, starting each day with the obituaries “to see who I knew,” and talking on the telephone to anyone who would listen, including the frequent and unsuspecting telemarketer. Undoubtedly, her greatest joy was time spent with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Richard Carter, her parents, Jessie and Alvin Neiger, and her son, William Scott Carter. She is survived by her children Richard Carter, Jr (Julie), Karen Bistawros, and Timothy Carter (Shaun Gines), eleven “EXCEPTIONAL” grandchildren - Elena Makarion (Steven), Rachel Carter (Brandon Record), Jonathan, & Benjamin Carter; Cameron Everett (Chris), Jeremiah & Justis Bistawros; Jackson, Ethan, Griffin, & Louisa Carter, and three “STUPENDOUS” great-grandchildren - Aleithyia Makarion, Eleana Henderson & Liam Everett. She is also survived by her beloved brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin Neiger, Jr (Barbara) & Bill Neiger (Leslie), plus a large extended family including “adopted” grandchildren Kaitlyn, Aubrey & Scott Gines, former children in-law Carolyn Berry & Baheg Bistawros, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.

A virtual memorial to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held on February 13, 2021, 12pm (EST), via Zoom. https://rochester.zoom.us/j/97676762855 All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Elsmere Presbyterian Church, 606 New Road, Wilmington, DE 19805.
