Obituary for Edward Francis Blest

Edward F. Blest, 74, passed away December 21st, 2020 after a short illness at Christiana Hospital.

Edward was born December 5th, 1946 to William and Josephine Blest in Wilmington. In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne Dale, his sister-in-law, Sandra Blest and his cousin, Charles Rice. He is survived by his brother, William Blest (Beverly Domino), his nieces, Victoria Hall (Glen Hall), Mary Ann Rich, and Bertie Raucci (Drew Raucci), and his nephews, Albert Rich, Robert Dale, and David Dale. He is also survived by his goddaughter and great-niece, Jessica Deery, godson and great-nephew, Ryan Hall, great nieces Courtney Walker and Brianna Santiago and great nephews, William DiMascio and Glen Hall III.

Edward was a lifelong Delawarean, who attended St. Mary’s grade school on Pine Street in Wilmington. After graduating Wilmington High School, he enlisted in the Navy in 1967 during the Vietnam War. He served on both the USS New Jersey and USS Joseph Strauss, in Food Services, and left the Navy in March of 1971. While serving in the Navy, he meant his ship mate Frank Borowiak, and along with Frank’s wife Bernie, they remained friends through the years.

After his military service Edward went to work for St. Francis Hospital where he was employed as their cook for 38 years. He enjoyed his co-workers and was beloved by many, as he often took the holiday shifts so that his fellow employees could spend time with their families.

Edward loved to travel and had a special place in his heart for Atlantic City, where he stayed in the summers with his parents and siblings and then over the past few years, the Outer Banks with his brother and nieces and nephews. He was an avid reader and loved Victorian murder mysteries. His favorite thing by far though was his love of animals, especially his cats who meant the world to him.

Edward will be remembered as a kind soul, who brought laughter and joy to his family and friends. He touched so many hearts along the way and was always there to brighten the lives of others.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 28th, at 10:00 am at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 521 Harmony Street, New Castle, DE 19720. Internment will immediately follow at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Due to the current health concerns, and your safety and theirs, the Blest family respectfully requests that everyone be diligent in maintaining appropriate social distancing, and wear masks as you offer your condolences.
