Obituary for George Michael Schimdt Sr.

George Michael Schmidt, Sr
Age 69 of Wilmington
Peacefully passed away on April 6, 2022. surrounded by his loving family. He fought valiantly for 12 years through various illnesses.
George was born to the late George E. and Helen B. (Pienkos) Schmidt and was a life-long resident of Wilmington. George was a 1970 graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School. He was a talented football player and helped to his team to an undefeated season in 1969. After graduation, George attended Wesley College where he also played football and assisted the team to earn a spot in the Sterling Silver Bowl in Kansas.
George was immensely proud of his 31-year career in carpentry. He was a member of Local 626 Carpenters Union in New Castle later becoming Local 255 in Philadelphia retiring in 2009.
During his retirement, he could be found in his garden. He was a skilled horticulturist who did not let his physical limitation slow him down, even to the point of planting his tomatoes and peppers from his wheelchair. He was also a passionate fisherman. George loved spending time with his family on the Wye River or Lewes Bay fishing and crabbing. One of the family’s most treasured memory was spending every Friday after Thanksgiving on the Delaware Bay fishing together.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Daniel Schmidt, and his precious shih tzu, Sammy.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Tara Brohawn and George Michael Schmidt “Mike”; his grandchildren, Sienna and Bryce Brohawn; and his siblings, Deborah Blanco, Thomas Schmidt, and Brian Schmidt.
George developed friendly relationships with many of his medical professional, and the family extends a heartfelt thank you to Pearlie Fassett for her exceptional care, genuine compassion, and true friendship over the past ten years.
A celebration of George’s life will be held at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilm., DE 19805, on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 6:00pm-8:00pm Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi, R.C. Church, 901 New Rd., Wilm., DE 19805, on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 11:00am. Interment will take place privately.
