Georgia Irene Shinn,
(also known as Georgia Peaches, Mom, Mommom, Nana, Mumzy, Aunt Georgie, and friend),
aged 83, of New Castle, Delaware
Georgia died peacefully on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, surrounded by her family. Born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 18th, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Ann Elizabeth (nee Culver) Cannon. She grew up on Second Street in Historic New Castle, Delaware, where she lived the majority of her life. She attended William Penn High School and Delaware Division Nursing School where she graduated as a licensed practical nurse. After being a stay-at-home mom in her children’s early years, she worked for the Colonial School District. After her time in the schools, she went to work as a nurse for the State of Delaware at Emily P. Bissell Hospital. She also provided private duty nursing to a number of geriatric patients. This work was special to her as she saw the value of providing care to people who could no longer fully care for themselves. She retired after many years of nursing. Georgia was a member of Immanuel Church on the Green, and served on the Altar Guild.
Georgia loved sewing and was known by many in New Castle as an accomplished seamstress. Many will remember her as their “go to” for alterations and repairs. Georgia was quite talented and could make anything. While clothing was her specialty, she also made household items. If someone needed it fixed, altered, mended, made from scratch, or designed she figured it out. She made the wedding gown of her granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Temple Crossan by developing the pattern and fabricating the gown.
Georgia loved playing cards and socializing with friends. She was one of the “Second Street Girls”, a group of friends who grew up in Old New Castle and remained lifelong friends, meeting for lunches and other social occasions. Georgia loved a good shopping trip, scouring stores and outlets for that special find.
Additionally, Georgia loved a party and a gathering of family and friends, most notably carrying on the Cannon tradition of the annual Easter open house. All were invited and welcomed. The highlight of the party was the family recipe of eggnog that was loved by many. Georgia’s home was a welcoming spot and she was happiest when gathered with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Georgia was preceded in death by her much-loved brother Wallace L. Cannon, her granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Temple Crossan, and her nephew William C. Cannon. She is survived by her four children, Dora A. Irwin (Robert), Thomas L. Shinn (Beth), Vicky J. Newton (Richard), and Edmund W. Shinn (Nena). Georgia is also survived by her grandchildren, Kirsten Costango (Brandon), David Crossan, Sr. (Amber), Jessica Roach (Zachary), Carly Nelson (Matthew), Alexandra Newton, Adrienne Newton, Brittany Moriarty (Michael), Caitlin Irwin (Robert Holland), Sarah-Jayne Knoll (Jeffrey), Genny Willis (Michael), Joanie Shinn, Kelsey Nguyen (Phong). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, David, Samuel, William and Jack Crossan; Joseph, Thomas and Elizabeth Costango; Tabitha Knoll; Charlotte, Oliver, and Jack Roach; Evelyn and Theodore Nelson; Riley and Tessa Willis; Brody and Mia Moriarty; Marlee Shinn; Marlow, Lucah, Asher, and Avery Nguyen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She shared a special bond with her niece, Susanne Anderson.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 AM until 12 noon on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Krienen Funeral Home, 101 W 6th Street, Historic New Castle, DE 19720. A Funeral Mass will be held at Immanuel on the Green, 50 Market Street, Historic New Castle, DE, following the visitation. Interment will follow at The Glebe Cemetery in New Castle.
