Obituary for Grace Marie Long (Mangeri)

Grace passed away on August 26, 2022, at the age of 83.

Grace was born in Penns Grove, NJ on March 27, 1939, where she grew up and attended St. James School, graduating as high school salutatorian. After high school she studied for a time with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Englewood, NJ. Grace married Paul D. “Donnie” Long, Sr. in 1967 and was devoted to him and their two sons until Donnie’s death in 2021. They lived in Elsmere and were members of Corpus Christi Church for more than 50 years.

Grace spent much of her life as a homemaker, but also worked for Delmarva Power & Light, DuPont, Wilmington Hospital, and a small local publisher. She was an avid reader, with a particular interest in topics related to psychology and religion. Grace and Donnie had a passion for buying, collecting, and reselling antiques.

Grace volunteered throughout her life, including at her church, as a Eucharistic Minister, tending the flowers at the Shrine of Our Lady Queen of Peace, and in the AmeriCorps program. She was awarded the Order of Merit by the Diocese of Wilmington in 2007.

Those who met Grace knew her to be kind, gentle, and understanding, and she will be greatly missed.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mary (Bakan) Mangeri, and her husband, Donnie.

She is survived by her sons, Paul, Jr. and his wife Valerie; John and his wife Megan; her grandson, Ryan; and her sister, Sylvia (Mangeri) Nixon, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

A viewing will be held at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy. in Elsmere on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, from 9:30-11:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 905 New Road, Elsmere at 11:30 am. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery.
