Obituary for Irmgard Mary Liggio (Gamper)

Irmgard (Gamper) Liggio, age 70, of New Castle, DE peacefully passed away on May 26, 2021 after succumbing to a long, well-fought battle with Parkinson’s. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Monroe, NY, she was the oldest daughter of William and Irmgard (Russ) Gamper.
“Irm” graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School and met her soon to be husband while attending Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY. Several years later, after the loss of her son, she decided to become a nurse after experiencing the kindness and dedication of the nurses during this difficult period. She graduated top of her class from the Medical Center of Princeton School of Nursing. Her nursing career spanned over 30 years and her most rewarding years were spent working with physically and mentally challenged children.
Outside of work, Irm looked forward to having time with her sisters and nieces. Three of her sisters followed her footsteps and became nurses as well. And she enjoyed the company of a wonderful group of close friends who meant so much in her life. Irm was a big supporter of animal rights, some even claimed she was a “dog whisperer.” An avid sailor, it consumed most of her free time during the sailing season and even lived onboard her boat in Florida for a couple of years.
Irm is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Arthur Liggio, her 4 sisters – Charlotte Gamper, Patricia Gamper, Rita Miskin and Christina Peck, along with 5 nieces several of whom are health professionals. She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher.
Irm will be interred at Odd-Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ. A Celebration of Life will be planned in the near future.
