Obituary for James "Pop" Fitzsimmons Sr.

James “Pop” Fitzsimmons, Sr.

Age 85, from Elsmere, Delaware passed away on December 15, 2010 at Regal Heights Nursing Home with his family at his bedside.


Pop was born September 28, 1925 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Elizabeth Gillen and Ernest Fitzsimmons. He grew up in Snow Hill, Maryland where he worked on his grandmother’s farm before and after school. He graduated from Snow Hill High School before moving back to Delaware. Pop worked at Bellannca Aircraft, where he met his wife, Tillie.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with Company I 23rd Infantry, as a rifleman 745. He served three campaigns in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe before he was wounded and spent seven months in the hospitals. He received a Good Conduct medal, and two Purple Hearts. After the war, he worked at General Motors for 32 years until his retirement. After his retirement from General Motors, Pop worked at Superior Electric for 25 years.

Pop was a member of the American Legion Stahl Post #30, Moose Lodge, Amvets, Knights of Columbus, and the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Matilda “Tillie” in 1982 and his brother, Elmer Fitzsimmons. He is survived by his children, Joanna and Gene Joswick, Jr., Jim and Jane Fitzsimmons, Jr., Mary and Bucky Wrigley (with whom he lived for the past five years); his 8 grandchildren, EJ and Heather Joswick, Stefanie and Dave Consolla, Jill Fitzsimmons, Julie Fitzsimmons, Joelle and Mike Cordrey, Jimmie and Christy Fitzsimmons, III, Jessica Wrigley, Sean Wrigley; 12 great grandchildren; his sisters, Carolyn Stanley, Loretta and Richard Hill; his brother, Tommy and Yvonna Fitzsimmons; his sisters-in-law, Mary Fernandez, Rose Delcollo, Carolyn Fitzsimmons; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi R. C. Church, 905 New Rd., Elsmere, where he was a member for 56 years, on Monday, December 20th at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the church from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday evening. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
