Obituary for Joan P Hare (Parris)

Joan Parris Hare died peacefully on Sunday February 7th. She was 91.

Joan was born in Chester, PA on October 18, 1929 to Mary (Campbell) Parris and George E. Parris Sr. Her family moved a several times in her youth within Delaware County including Middletown and Bethel Townships before relocating to Delaware. The family’s first home in Delaware was Pen-Del Farm on Milltown road; now the development of Cedar Crest. She graduated from Conrad High School in 1947. Joan worked at Braunstein’s Department Store, Bell Telephone, and DuPont until she started her family.

Joan married John J. Hare in 1958, and they had two sons, Michael and Patrick. Upon the death of her husband, John in 1977, Joan returned to DuPont where she worked until her retirement in 1992. She continued to work until age 79, first at Especial Day in Trolley Square and then at Jonas Miller Bakery in the Riverfront Market.

Joan was a longtime member of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish where she was volunteer for the Italian Festival. She also served as President of the Mother’s’ Guild at Saint Edmond’s Academy and President of the Ladies’ Elks Lodge 307. She served several years on the 6th District City Democratic Committee and currently served on the Salvation Army of Delaware’s Auxiliary.

A kind, thoughtful and happy person, Joan radiated love to all those around her. She loved her family and friends deeply and adored her beloved grandchildren. One of her most endearing and enduring qualities was her passion to acknowledge all occasions with a card or a note for all those she loved and cared for. It was her gift and it touched so many.

Joan was predeceased by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her sons, Michael of Wilmington; Patrick (Bernardine) of Florham Park, NJ; her grandchildren Mary Catherine and Michael Joseph; her brother George Parris Jr. (Elizabeth) and several nieces and nephews.

A public viewing will be held on Thursday, February 18th from 5:00-8:00 pm at Archmere Academy, 3600 Philadelphia Pike Claymont, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 19, at 10:30am at St. Elizabeth R.C/ Church, 809 South Broom Street, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery. All COVID-19 protocols will be observed.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joan’s name to Saint Edmond’s Academy, 2120 Veale Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 or the John J. & Joan P. Scholarship Fund at Archmere Academy.
