Obituary for Jose Manuel Prado

Jose M. Prado passed away on December 26, 2018.

Jose was born in Naguabo, Puerto Rico on September 17, 1946, to the late, Julio & Felicita Prado. His family moved to Delaware in 1955. He was the youngest of 4 children.

Jose was a graduate of Wilmington High School, where he was very involved in the Marching Band. As a teenager he enjoyed music and played in a band called “The Teen Kings” with his friends. After High School, Jose enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in the Vietnam War. While in the Service he was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation and other service medals.

Jose was very active in community services associated with the Latin Community in Wilmington, particularly with promoting dances as a business and for raising funds for nonprofits groups. He is best known for his many years as host of University of Delaware’s Public Radio station, where he hosted the “Radio Uno” program.

He is survived by his children, Keith Prado and wife, Christine, of South Carolina; Jennifer Brown and husband, Kem, of North Carolina; and Julio Prado of Wilmington; his four grandchildren; and his longtime partner, Irma (Janet) Rodriguez of Wilmington (Julio’s mother); his brothers, Ismael Prado and wife, Cisa, of Wilmington and Juan Prado of Pennsylvania; his sister, Carmen Rodriguez and her husband, William, of Newark, DE; and many nieces and nephews.

Jose was a long-time resident of the Veteran Hospital in Elsmere and the family would like to express their gratitude for all the support and care that Jose received.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service for Jose on Wednesday, Jan 2 at 7:00 pm at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilm., DE 19805. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 pm- 7:00 pm. Interment will take place on Thursday, Jan 3 at 10:00 am at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701.
