Obituary for Joseph E. Mays

Joseph E. Mays, age 88, of Elsmere, DE, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2021.

He was proudly born and raised in Charleston, WV (almost heaven) in 1932, son of the late Charlie and Beulah Mays.

Joe served honorably in the Navy during the Korean War and went on to enjoy a 38-year career with the DuPont Company (Edgemoor plant location), retiring in 1994. One of his last and most memorable assignments with Dupont was assisting with training and design of a new pigment producing facility in Taiwan, China.

Just some of Joe’s interests included western movies, old-time country music, dancing, Blue Hen football and Philadelphia sport teams. He was a Master Mason with Unity Lodge No. 32 located in Newport, DE and a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite bodies in the Valley of Wilmington. Above all, his passion was for his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Jean Mays and his sisters, Alice Vermillion and Lois Mays. Left to cherish his memory is his son, Robert Mays, daughter-in-law Janet; grandson, Matthew Joseph Mays; his companion, Janet Savage and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Thursday, May 6 at the Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere, DE. Interment will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
