Obituary for Leonard A Jezyk Sr.

Leonard A. Jezyk, Sr. passed away October 24, 2020 at the Christiana Care Wilmington Hospital and has gone on to join his beloved wife, Patricia Ann (McCaffery) Jezyk in Heaven with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage.

He was also predeceased by parents, Anthony and Sophie (Buczek) Jezyk; his brother, Stanley and his sisters, Pearl Dawson, Jeannette Sikora and Edwina Lewandowski.

Leonard was born June 16, 1929 at home on 5th Avenue in the Browntown neighborhood of Wilmington. He was the youngest of 6 children and graduated from St. Elizabeth Elementary School and Wilmington High School, Class of 1948. He was a long-time member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. He enlisted in the Delaware National Guard and was in the 736 AAA unit. His unit was federalized into the United States Army in 1950 during the Korean War.

Leonard was active in the Boys Scouts with Troop 7, Pulaski Legion for over 65 years. He became an Eagle Scout in 1945 and continued in scouting as an adult leader earning the St. George’s medal, the Bronze Pelican and the Silver Beaver awards along with the Order of Merit. He was also the Scouting District’s Advancement Chairman where he approved all projects for boys working toward becoming Eagle Scouts. He was a life member of the Pulaski Legion.

Leonard worked for the DuPont Company for 43 years mostly at Chestnut Run. He was instrumental in the development of hyper-pure silicon metal which changed electrical systems throughout the world. Leonard was also a staff member of the Junior Achievement of Northern Delaware for several years.

His greatest enjoyment was spending vacations at the beach with his family and camping with the Scouts. He also enjoyed traveling to New England and Canada with his dear friends, Edmund and Jean Chmielewski.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Richard (Lynn), Ronald (Lori), Leonard Jr. (Vanessa), David (Jon), Timothy (Kathy) and Tina Jezyk (Eddie). He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dolores Rosiak; brother-in-law Larry Lewandowski, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 2, 11:00AM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington. A Viewing will be held on Sunday, November 1 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19805.
