Loretta M. Keenan

Age 78, passed at Christiana Hospital on Friday, March 18, 2022.

Loretta was born September 9, 1943 in Boston, MA, the daughter of Herman Francis Ostendorf and Marie Frances (Mulgrew) Ostendorf.

Born during WWII, oldest of five, Loretta graduated from St. Peter High School, Class of 1961. She then graduated from the University of Delaware, Class of 1965, where she met her husband, James Lawrence Keenan III.

Loretta, known as “Lori” to faculty and friends, taught Spanish at St. Mark's High School for over 30 years. She also served as the Chair of the Foreign Language Department at St. Mark's as well as teaching Italian for many years before retiring.

She enjoyed traveling and spending time at the Delaware Beaches, where she loved nothing more than collecting sea shells while walking one of her dogs or basking in the glow of the full moon over the water. She was a lover of music and books.

Loretta was preceded in death by parents, husband, and brother, James Ostendorf. She is survived by her sons, James Lawrence Keenan IV and Michael Francis Keenan; sisters, Winifred “Winnie” Mellinger and Elizabeth “Betsy” Larwa; and brother, Bernard “Bernie” Ostendorf.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5th and Harmony Streets, New Castle on Saturday, March 26, at 10:00 am. A viewing will take place at Krienen Funeral Home, 101 West 6th Street, New Castle on Friday, March 25, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Loretta can be made to St. Mark's High School, 2501 Pike Creek Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
