Obituary for Margaret Ann "Marge" Reiter (McGovern)
Margaret Ann (McGovern) Reiter
Age 71 of Wilmington
Passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024.
Marge was born in Wilmington to the late George and Cecilia (Gold) McGovern. She attended St. Elizabeth School for all 12 years and was a proud member of the 1970 graduating class. Immediately after graduation Marge went to work for Diamond State Telephone. She was a dedicated employee for over 36 years, retiring from Verizon in 2006. While there, Marge was active in the company Athletic Association, a member of the CWA, and made many lifelong friends including, Joette Schulte, Margie Walls, and Lisa Shaw. In retirement Marge went to work for The Independence School where she worked in the aftercare program for over 15 years.
On July 16, 1988, Marge married the love her life Bill Reiter. Together they shared many years filled with love and happiness until Bill’s passing in 2010.
Marge loved to live an active life. She was an avid traveler, visiting many new and exciting cities on cruises with friends and family and she cherished her yearly extended family vacation to the Outer Banks and Chincoteague Island. Marge was also a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and hardly missed watching a game. She loved watching QVC and was always on the hunt for the best deals on gifts. Marge enjoyed listening to country music and belting out her favorites from Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw. Her family will miss her excellent baking and cooking skills. No one has been able to replicate her meatballs, potato salad or famous pie crust. But above all Marge loved being a mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marge was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Lesniczak; her brother-in-law, William Valentine; her niece, Laureen Valentine; her parents-in-law, Will and Anna Reiter; her cousin, John Shaw; and her “sweet pea” Dutch Shepard, Athena, who was her ultimate protector.
Marge will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kelly Reiter-Shea, and her husband, Daniel, and her sweet grandson, Daniel “DJ” Shea Jr. She is also survived by her siblings, Joan Valentine and George M. McGovern (Mary Ann); her brother-in-law, Edward Lesniczak, Sr; and many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth R.C. Church, 809 S. Broom St., Wilm., DE, on Tuesday, January 16, at 11:00am. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilm., DE, on Monday evening, January 15 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Interment will take place after mass at All Saints Cemetery.
