Obituary for Mark Steven Whitlock
Mark Steven Whitlock, age 61, passed away on November 17, 2019.
Mark was the son of the late John Harvey Whitlock, Jr. and Edith Giacomelli Whitlock of New Castle, DE. Mark Attended St. Peter the Apostle School in New Castle and St. Mark's High School in Pike Creek, DE. He attended Delaware Technical and Community College and studied course work in Criminal Justice.
Mark joined the Delaware State Police on December 19, 1977, serving 27 years in various roles. Mark was promoted in July 1991 to Assistant Chief of Communications overseeing the three State Police 9-1-1 centers and Headquarters Data Center in Dover. Mark was selected to serve on many special projects including security details for many Presidential visits including the National Governor's Conference in 1998 held at the Hotel DuPont In Wilmington.
Mark retired in 2005 and joined the Delaware Department of Information and Technology until 2008 when he concluded his 30-year tenure with the State. In his short time at DTI, Mark was nominated twice for the Governor's Team Excellence Award. In 2016, Mark started a career at the Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Museum and Gardens. Mark enjoyed the job at Winterthur as he was able to connect with many old colleagues whom he worked with for many years including retired employees from the State, Wilmington, and New Castle County Police Departments.
Mark was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Becker Council, where he reached the rank of 4th Degree Knight.
Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold Charles (Philip) Whitlock in 2007.
Mark is survived by his aunts, Ellen Deputy (Edward) of Bedford, PA. and Frances Greenstein (Henry) of Naples, FL.; cousins, Frank and Cathy Castiglione of Camden-Wyoming, DE., Betty-Jo Keiper of St. Georges, DE., Cathy Walback (Bob Marr) of Wilmington, DE. Mark is also survived by a host of other cousins, too many to mention. Mark is also survived by a surrogate brother & sister, George & Megan McClelland of Olde New Castle; nephews, Opie, Bailey, Harry, and a niece, Dolly May.
Mark would like to thank family and friends for the many cards, visits, text messages and emails he received during his illness.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 521 Harmony St, New Castle, DE 19720 on Saturday, November 23 at 11:00 am. A viewing will take place at church from 9-10:30 am. Interment will be in St Peter the Apostle Cemetery.
