Mary Jo "MJ" Hannagan Mento


Mary Jo ended her journey here on earth and went to her everlasting home to fly with the angels on December 15th, 2018. She was born in Wilmington, DE on May 9th, 1931 to the late Thomas J. and Catherine F. Hannagan. (Hunter) She was predeceased by her five brothers, Hubert, James, Thomas, Jack and Frank.

Mary Jo graduated in 1949 from Wilmington High School. After raising her children, she worked at First USA bank, the Brandywine YMCA and St. Elizabeth elementary school in the cafeteria.

She was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister for over 40 years and was active in their R.C.I.A. program for over 20 years. She visited the homebound and started the rosary program at various local nursing homes. She started the Catholic Ministry at the Wilmington General Hospital, was on the first team for the Diocese Healing Ministry at St. Mary’s the Assumption Parish, a regular at Eucharistic night at St. Matthews, was a member of the Lazarus healing ministry and was a member of the Our Lady Queen of Peace prayer group at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. She was also a parishioner of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Lewes, DE. She received many blessings from her ministries and lived her Catholic faith daily. In addition, she was a volunteer for hospice patients.

Her greatest joys in life were spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughters. They were the center of her life. She also cherished the times she spent and the memories she shared with her many dear friends.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Josepha (Jo) and Bill Preston, Michele and Larry Weiss, Mary Catherine and Charlie Lawson, and Sheila and Andy Dixon; 3 grandchildren, Kevin Coen (Kristina), Lawrence "LJ" Weiss, Jr. (Courtney), Sara Kate Weiss; 2 great-grandchildren, Caroline and Elizabeth Coen; and her many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, December 21 at 11:00 am at St. Elizabeth R.C. Church, 809 S. Broom St. Wilmington, DE 19805. Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 10:30 am with recitation of the rosary being held in front of the Blessed Mother statue at 10:30 am. Burial will be held at Cathedral Cemetery.

The family requests no flowers or gifts and instead a donation can be made in memory of Mary Jo to Salesianum High School, 1808 N. Broom St. Wilmington, DE 19802 or St. Hedwigs R.C. Church, 408 S. Harrison St. Wilmington, DE 19805.
