Mary “Johnna” Burroughs
Age 90, passed away peacefully, on Fri., Jan. 7, 2022 in the comfort of her home, with her daughter by her side.
Johnna graduated from St. Peter School, after attending grades 1 thru 12. At a high school dance, she met her future husband. Forgoing a career as a journalist, she married, John, and promptly started raising a family of five sons and one daughter.
As a young adult, Mary changed her middle name to Johnna, in honor of her father, who passed away when she was 10 years old. Once the children were old enough to fend for themselves, Johnna went to work as a waitress. She quickly advanced to bartender at the Spirit of 76 Lounge on duPont Highway, where she was a fixture for 26 years. She then worked at Buddy’s for 5 years and at Delaware National Country Club for 4 years until it closed, one month before her 80th birthday. It took Johnna a year to accept that she would not find another bar job. She considered working as socializing with friends each night.
Johnna was devoted to her 6 children, 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. She loved to dance whenever possible, and shopping for gifts was her favorite hobby.
Johnna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Reed, and infant daughter, Mary Lynn.
She is survived by her husband, John A. of 71 years; her children, John L., Michael (Iva), David, Timothy (Nadine), Marissa Walls (Ray), Daniel (Valerie); 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial on Mon., Jan. 24, at 11:00 am. at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 521 Harmony St., New Castle, De 19720. A viewing will take place at the church from 10:00-1100 am. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery.
