Obituary for Melvin "Sonny" Cavazzini
Melvin P. (Sonny) Cavazzini of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
Sonny was born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 30, 1944, the son of the late Anita (Antonini) and Melvin Cavazzini. He was a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School where he played football and subsequently attended West Chester University. He served in the Delaware National Guard.
Sonny was in the mushroom business for many years before ultimately opening Cavazzini’s Subs and Steaks in the Prices Corner Shopping Center.
After retirement from Cavazzini’s, he enjoyed time at Delaware Park and following sports teams, especially Philadelphia teams.
Sonny was well known for always telling a great joke or funny story. No one loved a practical joke more than Sonny and he was extremely proud of his Italian heritage.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marilyn (Quigley) and his beloved daughter Angela.
He is survived by his son, Paul (Charlotte and son Matt); his brothers, Robert (Jennifer) and Michael (Doreen); and his nephew and nieces, Rob, Leah, Nicole and Addy, and numerous cousins.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Complete Care Brackenville for the care Sonny received.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 21st at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy. Wilmington, from 8:30 am until 10 am, followed by a memorial service. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Kennett Square, PA.
