Obituary for Paul J Sparks Sr.

Paul J. Sparks, Sr. age 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 3 at Christiana Hospital.

Paul was born in New Castle, DE to the late Edward and Jenny Sparks (Mchugh).

Following his graduation from Salesianum High School in 1949, Paul enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and proudly served his country during the Korean War era. Pusan Beachhead, Nakdong River Offensive, and the Inchon Invasion were among the battles he fought. Notedly he was a survivor of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Paul went onto work for Chrysler in the Newark Assembly Plant until his retirement in 1991.

Paul was passionate about the NY Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers, barely missing a chance to enjoy a game. He looked forward his weekly card games, playing against both his friends and family. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden but had a green thumb when it came to his rose bushes. Paul truly embraced his hometown of New Castle. He loved routing on the William Penn Colonials football team, and Friday night happy hours at Portofino’s. Above all else, Paul cherished his time spent with his beloved wife, Dawn, his children and his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his son, Steven Sparks; siblings, Delores Stradley, Jane Ann Perkins, Edward Sparks, Jim Sparks, Marie Dougherty, Theresa Freebery; and his first wife, Bobbie Sparks.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Sparks of New Castle; son, Paul, Jr. of New Castle; daughter, Debby Lamey (Keith) of Middletown; grandsons, Brendan and Jason Lamey of Middletown; and sister, Helena Naydock of Orwigsburg, PA.

Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing, followed by a short service, on Thursday, June 10 from 6-8pm at Krienen Funeral Home, 101 West 6th St. New Castle, DE 19720. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Park on Monday, June 28 at 11:00 am.
