Philip H. Davis, Sr
Age 80 of New Castle
Passed away peacefully on August 4, 2022.
Philip was born on June 19th, 1942. He was raised in Shawtown by his grandmother and aunt. He attended St. Peter Grade School and completed his high school education later in life at James Grove High School.
In 1959, Phil joined the Army National Guard. He was exceptionally proud of his military career starting as a private and retiring 39 years later as a Sergeant Major. He was a member of the 259th Airbourne Army Ranger Division and when he wasn’t jumping out of planes, he was working for the USPFO. In 1987, Phil retired from military service and went to work for MBNA retiring in 2011.
Phil was a devout catholic and member of Holy Spirit R.C. Church. Phil loved sports and coaching. He donated countless hours of his life coaching Holy Spirit CYO football and girls’ basketball and softball.
Phil was a hard-working man and even in his retirement he always found something to do. He loved to tinker around the house, make bird houses, and was happy to feed any animal that came into his backyard. Phil loved his dog and greatly enjoyed taking him on long walks every day. Phil liked traveling, camping with family, and playing horseshoes. He was a diehard Alabama and Green Bay Packers Fan and loved cheering them on through all the highs and lows.
Phil was preceded in death by his grandmother, Julia Davis; his aunt, Charlotte Davis; his mother Catherine Medora; Stepfather, Joseph Medora; his father Samuel Harrison; and his sister, Joyce Bermudez and Elizabeth Buckley.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Phoebe Davis; his sons, Philip Davis Jr. (Jenn), and Mark Davis (Jeannie); his grandchildren, Philip Anthony, Isabelle, Gabriella, and Laura; his great grandson, Jack; and his siblings, Rosemary Matarese, Mike Davis, Debbie Minshall (George), Joseph “Slugo” Medora, Monica Massey (Lance), Janet Freese (Gary), Maryann Nagle (Terry), and Sam Harrison Jr. (Norma) and Cindy Stocktill (Kenny). Phil is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Marie Wilson who provided him with unending and selfless care over the past several years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Rd., New Castle, DE 19720, on Thursday, Aug 11 at 11:00am. Friends may call at the church from 10:00am-11:00am. Interment will take place at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery.
