Obituary for Thomas P Hornig

Thomas P. Hornig, age 83 passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on September 30, 2018 on the Compassionate Care unit at St. Francis Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey until he married his high school sweetheart Ann. He resided in Union, New Jersey for over 50 years until moving to Wilmington Delaware in 2015

Tom worked for the Lummus Company for 30 years. He also worked in real estate and for Overlook Hospital. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Union Counsel #4504. He served in numerous roles including the Grand Knight and most recent, the Financial Secretary. He also organized the national bowling tournaments, ran the annual summer picnic and worked fundraising bingo. Even with all these activities, he made certain that his number one priority was always his loving family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maximillian Hornig and Mary (nee Bill); three brothers, Max, George and Martin; sister, Marie; twin sister, Evelyn; and son-in-law, Stephen Hempsted

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ann (nee Giordano); his four children, Karen Hempsted, Gary Thomas Hornig (Donna), Lisa Ferro (Frank) and Nancy Truitt. He was Pop-Pop to his pride and joy, his 12 grandchildren, Adina, Brittney, Nicholas, Kathryn, Michael, Jacquelyn, Edward, Thomas, Sandra, Jenny, Gina and Christopher. He was also known as Pop-Pop the Great to his 12 great-grandchildren, Kalea, Mason, Gavin, Kayla, Mia, Lily, Ryan, Mitch, Maisie, Jacob, Olivia and Oliver; his sister-in-law, Joyce Hornig and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 5, at 9:15am at St. Michael R.C. Church, 1212 Kelly St. Union N.J. 07083. Friends may call at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave, Union, N.J. 07083 on Thursday, October 4 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery following the Mass.
