Umberto (Bert) Flocco, Sr. of Newport Gap Pike passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Wilmington Hospital with his wife by his side. He suffered from chronic illnesses and underwent several major surgeries over the years and always managed to bounce back, except this time he was too weak and frail to fight back. He would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on March 26.
After Bert retired from DART, he became a chief cook, meal planner, grocery shopper, chauffer, and gardener. Each year he was always first to pick tomatoes the first week of June. When his wife would complain his vegetable garden was encroaching into her flower garden, his response was “you can’t eat flowers.” Famous last words!
Bert was preceded in death by his son Angelo; his brothers, Gabriele and Alfredo; and his parents, Venera Tulio and Angelo Flocco.
He is survived by his wife, Mary-Lou; son, Bert, Jr.; granddaughter, Sara A. Flocco, who adored her Pop-pop; his brother, Antonio of Broomall; sisters, Elisa Berardi of Philadelphia, Maria Vadala (Lillo) of Maryland, Elena D’Alterio and Filomena Fantini of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service on Thursday, March 25, at 12:00 pm at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy. Wilmington, DE 19805. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:30-12:00. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery. Due to COVID a memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
