Obituary for Walter James "Jim" Johnston Jr.

Walter James “Jim” Johnston
Age 73 of New Castle
Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, January 9, 2020.
Jim was born and raised in New Castle. He was a proud 1964 graduate of William Penn High School. In August of 1969, Jim married the love of his life, Sharon Lawler. Together they spent many happy years raising a family. Jim was an employee of Chicago Bridge and Iron (CBI) where he worked as a welder. He then changed companies working for Del Tech as welding inspector, retiring in 1997. Jim was not one to sit still and he decided to go to work as a truck driver. He worked for Schneider National as a driver and instructor until 2011.
Jim loved going to Delaware Park, he especially loved trying his luck at the slot machines and watching horse racing. Jim was a die-hard Philadelphia Sports fan. He was proud of his Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers no matter their records. But most of all Jim loved his grandchildren. His most treasured time was simply spent enjoying their company.
Jim was preceded in death by his dear wife, Sharon Lawler Johnston, in 2012.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Jenn Hanifee, and her husband, Pat, and Jimmy Johnston, and his grandchildren, Kaitlin, Cassidy, Madison, Walter J. Johnston IV, and Delano Sheilds.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service for Jim at Krienen Funeral Home, 101 W. 6th St., New Castle, DE, on Thurs, Jan 16, at 12:00 noon. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00am-12:00noon. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions to be made to Good Will Fire Company, 401 South Street, New Castle, DE 19720.
