Anthony Paul "Turk" Foster passed away peacefully, with a lifetime of stories, laughter, and the kind of legacy only a true original could leave.
"Turk" was a nickname that stuck, even though when asked how he got it, he'd shrug, grin, and admit he had absolutely no idea. But to everyone who knew him, the name just fit. He was tough as hell, quick with a comeback, and full of the kind of grit and humor that left an impression on everyone he met.
Born in Old New Castle, Delaware, Turk was the son of the late James W.J. and Dorothy (DiCamillo) Foster.
A proud "river rat" through and through, Turk's heart belonged to the Delaware River. It was his playground, his peace, and his second home. He spent countless hours fishing, duck hunting, and walking the riverbanks collecting anything and everything the tide left behind. If it washed up, chances are Turk dragged it home and found a use for it - or at least a story to go with it.
In Old New Castle, Turk became something of a legend. People in town would see him time and time again - steady, focused, and almost stoic - guiding his boat into the water or pulling it back out, whether at Bull Hill or along the familiar river spots he knew so well. It was a scene many grew up watching, a quiet constant that never really changed. You didn't have to know him personally to recognize him - you just knew that was Turk.
An avid outdoorsman, champion trap shooter, and trusted hunting guide, Turk found his joy outside. He had a deep love for wildlife and took quiet pleasure in feeding the birds and watching them gather in his yard. His days were best spent in the woods, on the water, or simply sitting still and soaking in the natural world around him. Many learned from him - not just how to hunt, fish, and crab, but how to respect the land, the water, and the quiet moments in between.
Turk was also a sixty plus year member of the Local Carpenters Union 626 in New Castle, where he worked hard, took pride in his craft, and built a lifetime of friendships. He was also a longtime member of St. Anthony's Club, St. Gabriel's, the TAC Club, and the VFW in Chesapeake City, just to name a few. These were places where he built cherished friendships and spent many hours playing shuffleboard, bocce, and softball - usually with a laugh, a story, and a competitive spark that never faded.
In his later years, Turk shared a house with Kathy tucked on a Christmas tree farm in Middletown. It was surrounded by nature, peace, and the kind of calm they loved. Their home wasn't just where they lived - it was a place where people came to sit, laugh, share stories, and stay awhile. Their door was always open, the beer was always cold, and the company was always good.
His loyal dog, Gator, was once his constant companion - a four-legged shadow who followed him everywhere. Though Gator had long since passed, Turk never forgot him and spoke of him often, as any true dog lover does.
Throughout his illness, Turk was lovingly cared for by Kathy. She never left his side. She was not only his caregiver but his fishing partner, and the one who stood beside him for more than twenty-two years at the trap shoots and many, many adventures.
Those who knew Turk will remember him for his quick wit, strong will, quiet kindness, and the way he made even the simplest moment feel memorable. He lived life on his own terms, without fuss or pretense, and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Turk will be deeply missed by Kathy, his family, and the many friends who were lucky enough to sit beside him, share a story, and laugh until it hurt.
Turk is survived by his soulmate and best friend, Kathy Calvarese, his children, Elizabeth Munzer (Mark), Eileen Woodie (Mark), Tracey Foster, and Stephen Foster (Danette), Kathy's children, Matthew (Andrea), and Dan. Grandfather to Andre, Anthony P. III, Danielle, Aiden, Tenley, Stephen Jr., and Olivia. His sisters, Elizabeth and Camille, and brother, Tom, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Anthony Paul Foster, Jr. (Patrice).
If you'd like to honor Turk, take a walk outside, feed the birds, or raise a beer in his name.
A Celebration of Life for Turk will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, 2:00 at St. Anthony's Club located at 1017 Gray Street New Castle, DE 19720.
