Barbara Myers Sweeney

Age 90 of Wilmington

Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 6, 2025.

Barbara was born the only child of the late Herbert and Gladys Ley. She grew up in Wilmington and was a proud 1952 graduate of Wilmington High School. Upon gradation Barbara enrolled in nursing school. This began her over 40-year career as a nurse. She primarily worked as a floor nurse at Wilmington Hospital, retiring from the outpatient services unit after many dedicated years.

Barbara enjoyed playing cards; especially pinochle, gardening, and was an avid reader. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, James Sweeney; her children, David Myers, and Sheryl Zitzelberger; her stepchildren, Kate Sweeney (David Simmons) and Philip Sweeney; and her grandchildren, Abigail and Emily Zitzelberger. Barbara is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Eileen Ristow (Robert) and Catherine "Kit" Nennstiehl.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service for Barbara at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilm., DE 19805, on Wednesday, Jan 15 at 11:00am. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00am-11:00am. The burial will take place privately at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
