Obituary

Cecilia Francis (Shields) Creedon

Cecilia Francis (Shields) Creedon, 99, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, from natural causes at The Lorelton in Wilmington, Delaware.

Cecilia was born on July 19, 1927, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to William A. and Ethel Tocik Shields. William was born in the United States and Ethel was from Hungary. One of 17 children, Cecilia was a beloved aunt to more than 100 nieces and nephews.

Cecilia attended St. Paul's Parochial School in Wilmington and graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1945. After graduation, she worked in the Billing Department at Delaware Hospital in Wilmington and later in the Computer Department for the City of Wilmington, which eventually became the Computer Department of New Castle County. She retired in 1989.

Cecilia lived in Wilmington with her husband, John Joseph Creedon, Jr., and their two sons, Michael and Daniel. Following John's death in 1974, she continued to make Wilmington her home before eventually moving to Newark, Delaware and briefly lived in Middletown , DE.

Ceil loved her family, her birthday, Notre Dame, Delaware Park (always the grey horses), anything purple, and a good quip at someone else's expense. She suffered no fools, and you had better be quick-witted around her. Above all, Cecilia was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, as well as the family matriarch - a title she especially enjoyed for many years.

Cecilia is survived by her sons, Michael and Daniel (Susan); her grandchildren, Michael P. Creedon, Jr. (Meghan), Jennifer Creedon, Julie Assini (Eric), Patrick Creedon (Mary), and John J. Creedon III (Hallie); and her great-grandchildren, Caleb Creedon, Braeden Creedon, Gabriel Creedon, Quinn Creedon, Mason Creedon, Jack Assini, Grace Assini, Colt Creedon, and Cash Creedon. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Creedon; her daughter-in-law, Regina Ventresca Creedon; and 15 of her 16 siblings.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Lorelton and Compassionate Care Home Health and Hospice for the kindness, care, and concern they showed Cecilia, which she greatly appreciated.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, on November 12, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. prior to Mass. Burial will follow immediately after Mass at Cathedral Cemetery.
