Obituary

Charles C. Hitchens, Sr.
1942 - 2019

Charlie passed away in his home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday March 7, 2019.

In his youth, he attended William Penn High School. He then served the Delaware National Guard, as a sergeant, in the "D" Battery 198th artillery. As a life member of the Good Will Fire Company, he was one of the original paid ambulance drivers. Through the volunteer service, he held the offices of Captain of the Rescue Squad, Vice President, and a Board of Director. He was a New Castle City Police Officer in the late 60s until his apprenticeship was completed to be a craftsman for the Pipefitters Local 80 (now Local 74). Most of his working career was at the Delaware City refinery as a pipefitter until his retirement. He was later hired as fire and safety at the same refinery.

Charlie was a guide for the Eastern Shore Hunting Service, a member of the Townsend Sportsman Association, the Wounded Wing Hunting Club, and Saint Anthony's. He was not only a Maryland commercial crabber and sport fisherman on his boat, the Triple C's, but also an all-around hunter. He spent most of his time at his summer retreat, Beach Harbor. He was a member of the American Legion #296 of Queenstown Maryland and a past member of Saint John's Masonic Lodge and The Tall Cedars.

He survived by his wife of 53 years, Marjorie (Moore); his precious little dog, Bella; and their children, Marjie Anne Redman (Bucky), Charles Jr. (Lori), and Christopher (Kelly). Along with the loves of his life, his grandchildren, Kyle (Jessica) and Hunter Hitchens and Trent and Ryanne Redman.

As one of eleven children, Charlie survived by Ann Thomas (Jim), Penny McMahan, Robert, Edward, and Dan (Jim).

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 15th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 101 West 6th Street, New Castle, DE 19720. In lieu of flowers, Charlie requested donations be made to The American Legion, Benedict A. Andrew Post #296, 6200 Main Street, Queenstown, MD 21658.
