Charles Whitall
Of South Bethany DE, formally of Wilmington, passed away peacefully in Lewes, Delaware in Cadbury at Lewes, surrounded by his family on Wednesday December 2. Charles was born and raised in Hillside, New Jersey.
He was the son of the late James and Mable Morrison Whitall. Charles was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Marcia Heckman Whitall, and in 1979 by his beloved son, Jeffrey Charles Whitall, and also brothers James and Vincent Whitall.
He is survived by his devoted wife of five years, Nancy Brubaker Whitall, his daughter Marilyn Whitall Beeson,and her husband Robert Edward Beeson. He is also survived by Nancy's children Chip Brubaker, Suzanne Yale, and Amy Brubaker. Their grandchildren include Tristan Beeson, Marina Beeson, Erika Brubaker, Steven Brubaker, Andrew Yale, and Gwendolyn Yale. Nephews include James Whitall and Wayne Whitall.
Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945 and followed the D-Day invasion into Germany. He was wounded in battle and returned to the states after receiving numerous commendations. After the War, Charles completed an apprenticeship with Millard F. Davis through the Delaware State Board for Vocational Education. He was then hired in 1954 by Chappell Jewelers on 10th and Shipley St. in Wilmington, Delaware where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He repaired and crafted exquisite jewelry and supervised the repair shop. ..'give it to shop".
Charles was an active member of Elsmere Presbyterian Church as during the horrors of war, he made the commitment to serve his Lord. He served for many years as Worship and Music Chairperson, Head Usher, Elder, Deacon, and Moderator of the Session. He will always be remembered for his gift of making visitors and members alike feel welcomed and at home in the church. In his final years he enjoyed an associate membership also with St. Matthew's Methodist Church in Fenwick, Delaware.
Charles also dedicated much of his life to service with the Greenhill Lions Club in Elsmere Delaware. He worked vigorously on every fundraising endeavor, served as Club President, and was a recipient of the Ralph Helm Fellow as well as the Melvil Jones service awards. One of his greatest joys was ringing the Bell at Christmastime for the Salvation Army. He taught the Roaring Lions public speaking group and took much pleasure in editing the Greenhill Lions Den bulletin. He was a 70 year member of Armstrong Lodge 26 A.F. & A.M.
Charles loved serving people and serving his church. He moved full time to South Bethany Beach in 2005 where he enjoyed boating and being near the ocean.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service at Elsmere Presbyterian Church, New Rd., Elsmere on Tuesday morning, December 7th at 11 a.m. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Monday evening, December 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a Masonic Service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Interment in Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.
