Obituary

Christopher L. McDermott, Jr.

Age 72, a resident of Gilpin Hall passed away peacefully after a long illness.

Chris was a 1957 graduate of Wilmington High School.

He was a member of the Delaware National Guards.

He retired in 1983 as Batallion Chief of the City of Wilmington Fire Department. He was very proud of the Wilmington Firefighters and had an extensive knowledge of the history of Wilmington and its various firehouses from the 50's to present.

Chris served on the Board of Directors of the Wilmington Police and Fire Federal Credit Union.

He enjoyed working at the Holy Rosary Carnivals in Claymont, and over 25 years would not miss a Tuesday night working at their Bingo where he so enjoyed his friends, especially Harry Whitby. Chris also enjoyed reading and music.

Chris was the son of the late Christopher L. McDermott, Sr. and Antoinette E. (Travis) McDermott. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jean Marie Hanna; and brothers, John T. McDermott, Sr. and Martin C. McDermott. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Goodchild (Leslie) of Newport, DE; son, Christopher L. McDermott, III of Millsboro, DE; sisters, Mary Lynn Brooks of Wilmington, Jacqueline Brooks (Alan) of Newark, DE; brother-in-law Ken Hanna; sister-in-law, Diana McDermott; and granddaughter, Kierney Goodchild. He is lovingly survived by many nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, 2013 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 11 am. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 am. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery.
