Passed away peacefully on January 15, 2016.
Donna was born in Asheville, North Carolina, the daughter of Beverly (Moulton) and William Hyatt. A graduate of William Penn High School, Donna went on to a nearly 30 year career with New Castle County in the Department of Code Enforcement. She had a true vocation for helping people and was passionate about her job.
In her spare time, Donna was an avid reader and thrift store junkie. She was also a wicked good badminton player and had a delightfully off-kilter sense of humor. She loved alternative music and one of the highlights of her life was seeing favorite bands in concert. Donna was an animal lover and enjoyed the company of her two Himalayan cats and tending to the fish, frogs, and snails who populated the pond she created in her backyard.
Donna was an exceptionally gifted seamstress and in recent years, had focused her creativity and talent on quilting. She had a knack for mixing colors and patterns, saying that it was "like painting with fabric." Her family, friends, and coworkers were the lucky recipients of many, many beautiful quilts over the years. Of the dozens of quilts she made, almost every one was made for someone else; she almost never made anything for herself. Her generous spirit was a true inspiration to everyone she knew.
Her passion for quilting was surpassed only by her passion for the great loves of her life: her grandchildren. They were her sun, moon, stars, and everything in between. She lived for them.
Donna is survived by a son, David Thompson, and a daughter, Adrienne Thompson Eckhardt (Rob), and grandchildren Madeleine and James Eckhardt.
A visitation will be held in remembrance of Donna on Monday, January 25 from 5:00-7:00pm at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilm., DE 19805.
