Passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 after a short battle with lung cancer. Doug was born in the Catawba Mountains of Roanoke, VA.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marines at the age of 15 and moved up the rank of Sergeant. During World War II, he served in the Pacific, and he also served in the Korean War. He was discharged from the Marines in 1949, and he moved to New Castle, DE. He married Lucy Socorso in 1951 and raised his family.
He worked for Art Flooring and General Motors. He was a painter for the duPont Company in Newport, and he retired as an electrician at the duPont Experimental Station. Doug belonged to the Bowlerama Bowling League and won numerous trophies. He loved playing horseshoes and having 4th of July family picnics. He was an extremely talented wood carver, loved telling war stories, took pride in growing his bountiful vegetable garden, enjoyed playing cards at the Howard Weston Senior Center and winning the slots at Delaware Park.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lucy T. (Socorso) Garman; his parents, Oscar and Ida Garman; his sisters, Mary Lou, Roberta, Pauline, Edna; his brothers, William, Joffrey, Roscoe, Woodrow, Henry, and David. He is survived by his son, Alan; his daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, David DeGhetto; his granddaughters, Lisa, and her husband, Mark Varone, and Theresa, and her husband, Jason Veasey; his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kylie, Annabella, Erik, Anthony, Nicholas, and Guiliana; his sister, Margaret Bowman; his brother, Oscar Garman, Jr., of Virignia; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral Service at the Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere, on Friday, March 7, 2014, at 11:00 am. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.
