Age 72 of Denton, MD formerly of Dover, DE
Passed away suddenly at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.
Ed was born on March 24, 1942 in West Virginia to the late Ermal Ellen Bennett and Carl Edward Gates. He attended high school in West Virginia and graduated in 1957.
On May 20, 1967, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann O'Neill from Wilmington, Delaware. They were married for 47 years
Ed was an active member of the United States Air Force from 1961-65. He joined the Air Force Reserves in 1974, where he proudly devoted 21 years of service as Tech Sergeant Aircraft mechanic retiring from the military in 1995. Ed also worked for the DART bus service in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware as a driver for 5 years.
He loved the beach and the boardwalk and spent many summers vacationing with family in Lewes, DE. Ed also loved music and enjoyed listening to the "golden oldies" and Elvis Presley. He also enjoyed watching football, especially seeing his oldest grandson out on the field.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Jennifer Gates Pinder, his brother, Gene Gates, his granddaughters, Gabrielle Lynn Motter and Abigail Marie Motter; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Catherine O'Neill.
Ed is survived by his wife, Betty Ann O'Neill Gates of Denton, MD; his daughter and son-in-law, Colleen Gates Motter and Ken Motter, of Denton, MD; his brother, Earl "Jack" Gates of Texas; his nephew, Desmond Gates of Texas; his grandsons, Grady Motter of Denton, Logan Pinder of Newark, DE; and his granddaughter, Lily Parks of Arizona.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Matthews R.C. Church, 901 East Newport Pike, Wilmington, on Wednesday, March 18, at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, on Tuesday, March 17, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
