Obituary

Edward William Schofield, 74, of North East, Maryland, passed away on June 3, 2026, at Kentmere Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing surrounded by the love of family. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Virginia "Ginnie" and John Edward "Ed" Schofield, Jr., Eddie was the oldest of nine children.

Ed retired from Amtrak after more than 30 years as a skilled electrician in the Sheet Metal and Rail Transit Union's Mechanical Division. He began his career at the Chrysler Plant in Newark, Delaware, where he developed the strong work ethic and mechanical talents which served him throughout his life.

He was a longtime member of the Brandywine Rod & Gun Club and dedicated many years to youth leadership through Boy Scout Troop 285, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and later served as an Assistant Scoutmaster.

Ed had a deep and unwavering faith with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and was a parishioner at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Galena, Maryland. Never one to forget his roots, Ed cherished his memories and longtime friends made growing up in Cleland Heights and St. Elizabeth's Parish, where he attended grade school and played youth sports. He was a proud 1969 graduate of Conrad High School.

Ed also enjoyed a wide variety of interests and hobbies. He studied martial arts, mastering a brown belt in Judo, and becoming proficient in Shotokan karate. He was an avid supporter of Philadelphia sports, especially the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles. "Go Birds!" Ed loved listening to all types of music, discovering the local music scene, and enjoyed playing the guitar. Being outdoors was Ed's favorite place to be. He was introduced to hunting at an early age by his Uncle Billy Bowe and spent many days in a deer stand, a duck blind, or a boat. His faithful dogs through the years: Spirit, Skeeter, Gunner, Harley, and Bear often accompanied him and held a special place in his heart. Ed was also an enthusiastic collector of firearms and knives, appreciating their craftsmanship and history.

Ed will always be remembered as a gentleman with a quick smile, a kind and generous heart, and a warm sense of humor. He was respected and admired by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of being in his company.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother, William "Billy" Schofield. He is survived by his siblings, Carol, Joseph (Lisa), Linda (John) Cornely, Ginny (Tom) Schlotterback, Paul Francis, Maggie (Keith) Towler, and Michael (Roberta); fourteen nieces and nephews, and three great-nieces and nephews. Ed also left behind friends who felt like family, including Beth, Wayne and Lexi Lineberry, Josh and Matt Thompson, as well as numerous others whose lives he has touched.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff of Kentmere Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing for their dedication, loving care, and compassion. Family and friends may gather for visitation at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19805, this Friday morning, June 12, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. and Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
