Obituary

Eleanor McKinley Tidwell

Age 94, passed away at home November 6, 2012, surrounded by family after a brief struggle with cancer.

Eleanor was born September 23, 1918 in Wilmington to Charlotte Kennedy McKinley Sweeney and William McKinley. She was beloved by her step-father Joseph Sweeney. She graduated from Wilmington High School. As a young girl she was the Delaware State Spelling Bee Champion and was very proud of that throughout her life. Among her many working experiences, she was a secretary at Rollins Leasing

Eleanor was a homemaker who held family first and everyone was welcome in her home. Her chicken pot pie was legendary among the Tidwell family. She enjoyed spoiling all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was looking forward to doing the same for her great-great-grandchildren.

She met the love of her life, John Tidwell, at a dance and throughout their 65 years of marriage they greatly enjoyed going out dancing. He passed away in 2005. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Vance; and grandchildren, Amber Tidwell and Sean Tidwell. She is survived by her children, Michael (Cathy Branciaroli), Tim (Donna) and Michele Merlonghi (Steve); her grandchildren, Chris, Eric, Tim and Kristie Tidwell, and Johnny, Brian and Jason Anker; her great-grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley, Brianna, Tia, Brittany, Casey, Bradley, Cameron, T.J., Sienna, Kensi, Kirsten, Cody and Johnny; great-great-grandchildren, Cayden and Aubrey.

She was cared for in her illness by Chris Tidwell, Michele Merlonghi and family members. The family would like to thank Delaware Hospice for helping relieve her pain.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter R. C. Church, 5th & Harmony Sts., New Castle, on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10:30 am Friends may call at the church from 9:30-10:30 am Saturday morning. Interment in Glebe Cemetery, New Castle.
