Frank John McQuaid


Age 89, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Millcroft in Newark, DE.

Frank was born in Wilmington, DE to John J. and Mary A. (O'Keefe) McQuaid on May 3, 1925. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School. After graduating from high school, Frank entered the U.S. Army and joined the Americal Division. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater fighting in both Bougainville and Guadalcanal. Earning both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for service and injury, Frank was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946.

Following his return from World War II, Frank worked for a number of companies, including Dravo Shipyard, Trans World Airlines, DuPont de Nemours, while earning a business degree from Goldey College. In 1952, Frank took a position with Chrysler where he worked until he retired in 1987.

Frank married Margaret Krienen in 1953, and they raised their three children in Wilmington.

He enjoyed actively participating in valued organizations including Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Resurrection Building Fund, Heritage Park Civic Association, and the UAW. He had a lifelong affinity for trains and enjoyed taking his grandchildren on the Wilmington & Western Railroad and to their beach house in South Bethany.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years Margaret (Krienen) McQuaid; his sister, Nancy Krienen; his brother-in-law Gifford W. Nowland, and brother –in- law, William J., and his wife, Helen (O'Brien) Krienen, II.

Frank is survived by his daughters, Martha A. McQuaid, and Mary Louise Malloy (Kevin); his son F. John (Debbie); and his grandchildren, Bryan, Sean, and Mark Malloy, and Sam and Anna McQuaid; his sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Richard Harris, and his sister, Virginia M. Nowland; and many nieces and nephews, and valued friends.

The family would like to recognize the staff at Millcroft, who was devoted to his care and compassionate throughout his residency.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph on the Brandywine R. C. Church, 10 Church Road, Greenville, on Friday, July 25, at 10:30 am. A viewing will take place at the church from 9:30-10:30 am. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
