George Richard Fernandez
Age 88, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.
George was a gregarious, loving and caring man who found solace in his family, friends and the Catholic faith. He was born the son of the late Joseph and Nancy Lemarie Fernandez on February 3, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA.
George was orphaned as a young child during the Great Depression, and had to quickly learn to earn his own way in life. George was an intelligent and curious man, who had a passion for reading books and never missing an edition of the daily newspaper.
He retired from General Motors in 1980 after 20 years of service. Prior to GM, he was a sales supervisor for Huber Baking Company. George was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force during World War II, serving as an interpreter in Italy. He has long been a member of the Knights of Columbus Blessed Sacrament Council #3751. For 50 years, George served as a lector for Corpus Christi Church in Elsmere and always worked hard at their annual carnival. George enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida, and loved the beach. His greatest thrill had been chaperoning his granddaughter's school trip to China in 1989 - a trip he remembered fondly for the rest of his life. George was a lifetime member of Kirkwood Fitness Club and enjoyed the many friends he had made throughout the years.
George was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bill Pote, who died on December 26, 2009. George will be greatly missed by those he left behind including his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Jane Distana Fernandez; his daughter, Nancy A. Pote; his grandson, Todd A. Pote (Brigitte); his granddaughter, Shannon Pote; his two great-grandchildren, Brody and Isabella Pote; his sister-in-law, Rose Delcollo; and his brother-in-law, James Fitzsimmons, Sr.
