Obituary
Passed peacefully at home on January 13, 2015, with his family at his bedside.
Born on August 31, 1933 to the late Alvin Martin and Anna Mae Figgs, the family moved to Wilmington, DE when Harold was 5 years old.
He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1953 and was stationed in the Azores for the next 17 months in support of the 19th Logistic Support Squadron. Fulfilling his duty at Kelly Air Force Base and obtaining the rank of Airman 1st Class, he was awarded the Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals. Honorably discharged in 1957, he was employed by 2 aviation companies for 8 years, and then started a 14 year run at Electric Hose and Rubber Company in Wilmington. With foresight, Harold prepared himself for the eventual closing of EH&R in the early 1970's by enrolling in college classes at Del Tech Community College. Working full time and attending college classes, he became an expert in commercial refrigeration, and he began a 26 year career with McFoys Refrigeration until retiring in May, 1998. Harold's desire to keep working drove him back to work part-time for McFoys for an additional 5 years.
He was a tirelessly hard worker and a great provider for his family. Harold never lost his sense of humor, even in the final moments of his wonderful life. He was as a loving husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. He loved his dogs, who were his companions and by his side every moment he was home. His hobbies included square dancing with his wife and friends and archery.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Frances; 4 children, Harold, Jr. "Marty" and his wife, Rhonda, Ronnie and his wife, Patty, Bonnie and Andy; 7 grandchildren, Lorayne, Toya, Ashley and her fiancé, Chris, Kyle, Cheyenne, Taylor and Sean; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alex, Savannah, and Evyana.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a service at Wilmington Church of God, 2410 Newport Gap Pike, Wilm., DE 19808, on Thursday, Jan 22, 2015 at 1:00pm.
