Obituary

Herbert Franklin Mansfield, Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 92 at Courtland Manor in Dover, Delaware with family by his side on September 18, 2009. Herbert was born and raised in Easton, Maryland and was one of 9 children. He was the only one in his family to graduate from high school. When World War II started, Herbert joined the Army and served overseas in England and Germany during the war. He shared many of his memories of the war with his friends and family. After serving in the Army, he moved to Wilmington, Delaware and went to work at Pep Boys Stores, where he remained for 30 years.

He was married to his first wife, Barbara (Cox) Mansfield, for more than 30 years and they had 3 children together. Barbara passed away in February of 1981, and during her illness Herbert took care of her, taking early retirement in order to do so.

He later married Ann (Butler) Mansfield and has been happily married to Ann for 24 years. Herbert and Ann enjoyed traveling to visit his family and friends in Virginia and Florida, and they also enjoyed many wonderful trips with the Senior Center where they met. Herbert was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Mansfield and his daughter Deborah Mansfield Parisi. He is survived by his wife Ann Mansfield, his daughter Deann Ricco, his son Herbert Mansfield, Jr., his stepchildren Harley Spry, Alvin Callahan, Doris Pine, Gloria Connell, Alex Drummond, and Betty Cichocki. He is also survived by many other family members, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Herbert will be dearly missed by his wife, family and friends.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staffs and caregivers from Seasons Hospice, Shipley Manor and Courtland Manor, who provided wonderful care and support to Herbert in his final months.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Wednesday afternoon September 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
