Jeanette I. Dorris McCullough, 93, of New Castle, passed away on Aug. 9, 2024, at Wilmington Hospital hospice. Born in New Castle on July 17, 1931, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Ella Rossell Dorris.
She lived her entire life in New Castle, graduating from William Penn HS in 1949. She was employed by the telephone companies that served Delaware during her life: Diamond State Telephone, C & P Telephone, and Verizon. She retired from Verizon after more than 20 years of service.
The greatest joy of her life was being with family and home. She was happiest at the special Christmases she planned for everyone, carefully selecting gifts for each one. She loved being with children and entertained them with silly games and sayings. Each summer, she lovingly cared for tomato plants to have homegrown tomatoes. Jeanette enjoyed cooking for the family and collecting recipes to try out.
She cared for each person's well-being. When someone left her home to go anywhere, she said, "PGST," meaning "please, God, safe trip."
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother James A. Dorris II, cousin Jack Lynch, son-in-law Michael Flanagan, and Robert A. McCullough, Sr., father of Linda and Robert McCullough, Jr.
She is survived by daughter Linda Flanagan, of Waldorf, MD; son Rev. Robert A. McCullough Jr., of Rehoboth; grandchildren Marcella Flanagan, of Newark, NJ; Meredith Drumm (Leon) of Huntingtown, MD; Sean McCullough (Adrienne) of Mercer, Pa. , and Kelsey McCullough (Steve) of Landenberg, Pa; great-grandchildren Michael Drumm and Aurora Drumm and cousins Joan Pochvatilla of Camden; Beverly Rash, Patsy McMahon, and Jeanie Hutchinson of Elkton, Md. sisters-in-law Joyce McCullough Peck and Loretta McCullough and nieces and nephews.
