John N. Diggins beloved husband of Mary Veronica Shields Diggins, died at home on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. He was 94.
Mr. Diggins had been a freight conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad and its successor companies. He retired from Conrail.
He was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church in Wilmington and served on its Parish Council and Maintenance Committee. He and his wife were the recipients of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Merit Award for "their outstanding contributions to the diocese." He was a member of the Irish Culture Club of Delaware.
He was a member of St. Hedwig's Social Club and the Irish American Club in Chester, PA.
The Chester, Pa., native was a graduate of Resurrection Parochial School and St. James High School of which he was a Knight of St. James Alumni Association and was honored as a "Special Class Representative." He was a member of St. Hedwig's Social Club and the Irish American Club.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Housatonic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. Sr. and Helen A. Doherty Diggins, and his siblings, William A. Jr. and George Diggins, and Helen Jagger.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary V. and Gerald Hager, with whom he lived, and son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Ann Diggins; grandchildren, Joel, Beth and Keith, Kara, Jonathan and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine, Elizabeth, Emma and Piper.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, near New Castle, with visitation beginning at 10. Burial will be in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
