Joseph J. DiAngelo 88 passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday April 17, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born in Wilmington Delaware to the late Carmen and Dolores DiAngelo. (Ret) Colonel Joseph J. DiAngelo attended St. Peter's Parochial Grade School in New Castle and then graduated from William Penn High School in 1956. Joe was a halfback and safety on the William Penn High Football squad which was undefeated in 1953 and 1955. They lost only one game in 1954. He also participated as a player in the First Annual Delaware All Star Football Game. He was associated with the New Castle Little League and served several seasons as an umpire and manager. He was also an amateur softball umpire for ten years and worked fifteen games in the World Softball Tournament in Parma, Ohio. Joe served as past president and treasurer of the Saint Anthony's Day Celebration Committee of New Castle during the "eighties".

(Ret) Colonel Joeph DiAngelo's military career started on July 7, 1953, when he enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard in Battery D, 736th AA Battalion, Van Dyke Armory, New Castle Delaware. He graduated from the first Delaware National Guard Academy Noncommissioned Officer School in April 1967 as a Staff Sergeant. Two months later, he enrolled in the DNG Officer Candidate School and on July 27, 1968, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant and assigned to Battery A, 2nd Battalion in Smyrna, Delaware.
When the Delaware Army National Guard reorganized on January 1, 1970, Second Lieutenant DiAngelo was assigned to State Headquarters Detachment and served as the Administrative Assistant in the personnel section.

From 1973 to 1976, he was assigned as the training officer and Specialist School Commandant at the DNG Academy. From 1976 to 1978, he was the Secretary to the Chief of Staff, State Headquarter. Beginning in January 1979 he served as the Logistics Officer of Command-and-Control Headquarters, Wilmington, Delaware through October 1982. His final duty assignment was as supply and Service Management Officer, State Area Command until his retirement on October 19, 1991.

(Ret) Colonel DiAngelo's technician career began in the summer of 1956 when he was hired as a warehouse storekeeper at the United States Property and Fiscal Office. In 1961 he was promoted to Financial Inventory Accountant in the Fiscal Branch and in 1965 reassigned as a Data Processing Machine Operator.

After he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in July 1968, he functioned as a Supply Technician in the Stock Control Branch. One year later, he was appointed as the Supply Officer at the USP&FO. In 1977, he was selected as the Supply Management Officer and in August 1990 appointed as the Supervisory Logistics Management Specialist until August 31, 1991.

During his thirty-five years of service, (Ret) Colonel DiAngelo has worked for five Adjutant Generals and six United States Property and Fiscal Officers. Joe retired from the Army National Guard on October 19, 1991, as a Colonel.

Joe DiAngelo was affiliated with St. Anthony's Club New Castle and playing Bocce Ball, St. Anthony's Society New Castle, New Castle City Council 1999-2006, National Guard Association Retired, and St. Peter the Apostle R.C. volunteer. Joe was known to be the head chef and bottle washer for all dinners and events at St. Anthony's club. He also coached many youth sports such as CYO and New Castle Little League.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Carmen and Dolores DiAngelo, siblings Evelyn Covelli, Catherine Pritchard, Dorothy Octavio, and William DiAngelo. He is survived by his wife Diane DiAngelo, his son Joseph Mark DiAngelo and many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church on Tuesday April 29, 2025, at 11:00 am. Friends may call at Krienen Funeral Home 101 W 6th Street New Castle DE 19720 on Monday April 28, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Interment will immediately follow Mass on Tuesday April 29, 2025, at The Glebe Cemetery.
