Obituary

Katherine Grant Devenney
(Donahue)
"Aunt Katherine"

Mrs. Katherine Grant Devenney passed away November 14, 2009 two months shy of her 105th birthday.

Mrs. Devenney was born in Wilmington on February 9, 1905 daughter of Ora Mae Nichols and James Patrick Donahue.

She grew up in the Forty Acres and she attended Goldey College. She then worked for Freihofer Baking Co. She later joined Sears Roebuck Accounting Group on Market Street and retired from there in 1966. She enjoyed her almost 70 years with the Eastern Star where she made many life long friends. She also loved to travel throughout the U.S. visiting friends and family when she was in her 80's and 90's. She especially loved Montana where she stayed with her nephew and niece Jean and Paul Banks. At the age of 91, she brought home to Delaware her first dog ever, Rocky. They loved each other dearly.

Her husband Edward G. Devenney died in May 1987. They were married in Christ Church in October 1929.

Her zest for life was an inspiration to all she met and most of all to her family. She is survived by her niece and nephew Shirley and her husband James O'Neill with whom she lived; niece, Jean Banks of Montana; niece and nephew Joyce and Glenn Rude of Dover, DE; her niece, Patricia Long of Arkansas; and nephew, James Donahue of California; great nephew, Matthew Rude and his two sons, C. Jake Rude and Austin Rude, who were also a special part of her last years doing many things with and for "Aunt Katherine". She is survived by other nieces and nephews and their children who will always remember the great example of "Aunt Katherine".

Her 105 year old childhood friend, Mildred Courtney, spent many pleasant times reminiscing with Katherine about the century they lived through.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Thursday, November 19th at 1 p.m.. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 noon to 1 p.m.. Interment in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Per her wish no flowers; any contributions be made to the Delaware Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 121 Duke of York St., Dover, DE 19901, who added a lot of enjoyment to her last years with their Cassette Books for the Blind.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Rene and Dawn of Seasons Hospice.
