Obituary

Passed away at home on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Kitty was born in Wilmington, and was the daughter of the late James and Anna (Schwabb) Duffy. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Elizabeth High School in 1944. She played basketball and was on the baton twirling team at St. Elizabeth's. She was a medical secretary at UVA.

She married Joe Hemphill, who was her high school sweetheart.

Kitty was a member of a bowling league, book club, and bridge club. She enjoyed reading and loved candy, especially a 5th Avenue bar.

Kitty was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hemphill, her siblings, Bill Duffy, Audrey Hayes, Patsy Fortugno, and Jim Duffy. She is survived by her children, Marybeth (Pat) Nagle, Chris (Susan) Ayer, Tracey (Jim) Merrill, and Joe (Mary) Hemphill; her grandchildren, Stacy (Pat) Henry, Duffy (Kelly) Nagle, Ryan (Andrew) Conine, Matthew, Michael, and Max Ayer, Haley and Luke Merrill, Kelly Hemphill, Lyle (Christen) Hemphill; and her 12 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena R.C. Church, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington, on Monday, February 15 at 11:00 am. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
