Obituary

Passed away at Christiana Hospital on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, surrounded by her family and friends.
Kumi was born in Tokyo, Japan. She met the love of her life, Joe, in 1972 while he was serving in the United States Navy. They spent several years together in Japan until his tour ended and Kumi immigrated to United States. She become a United States citizen on February 5, 1977. Together Kumi and her husband lived in Dover for a short time, until 1978 when they moved to New Castle, Delaware and they lived happily ever after.
Kumi was a member of Goodwill Fire Company for many years. She enjoyed her role as an active member and often helped with the Ladies Auxiliary events. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, and cooking. However her favorite past time was watching softball and Japanese Soap Operas.
Kumi will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Joe Mullen; her sister in law, Cathy Majors (Rick); her brother in law, Tom Emerson III; her niece and nephew, Kristy Hankins (Issac) and Tom Emerson IV (Miranda); and her great niece and nephew, Macie and Tom Emerson V. She is also survived by her goddaughter, Penny Ursitti (Steve); close family friend Larry Dutton; as well as many dear friends who will miss her bright personality.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service for Kumi at Goodwill Fire House, 4th and South Streets, New Castle, DE 19720, on Tuesday, Feb 7 at 11:00am. Friends may call at the firehouse on Monday evening, Feb 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701, on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions to be made in Kumi's name to Goodwill Fire Company, 4th and South Streets, New Castle, DE 19720.
