Margaret Brady Lane Scheu
(Peggy Lane)
Our loving mother, Peggy Scheu passed away to the Lord on the morning of April 18, 2010. She was 86 years old. She was born in 1924 in Hagerstown, MD. Peggy was pre-deceased by her husband, Louis Scheu in 1983 and later daughter-in-law,
Debbie Scheu. She is survived by two sisters, Martha Ann Browning, and Virginia Lee Kirk. She is also survived by her eldest son John L. Scheu, daughter Margaret Louise Scheu (Peggy), son Robert L. Scheu, daughter Teresa Scheu Penza (Terri) and husband Tony Penza. Her grand-children are Chris Collins and wife Rebecca, Kristin Scheu Guhl and husband John Guhl, Robert L. Scheu Jr., Julia Scheu, Francesca Penza, and Julian Penza.
Peggy earned an Associates Degree in Business Secretarial at Goldey Beacom College and worked for the DuPont Company until her marriage to Lou Scheu in 1948. At that time she became a homemaker, raising four children and caring for a juvenile diabetic for 35 years. She enjoyed sewing and baking.
Peggy also developed a life dedicated to serving God, church, and humanity through numerous volunteer works. Peggy worked annually on Wilmington Garden Day, in various capacities, including chairman. She also worked with St. Andrew's Lenten Lunches and was well known for her lemon meringue pies and her "heavenly" angel food cakes.
She studied Education For Ministry and became the first woman lay reader at St. Andrew's to serve communion and prepare her own sermons. In 1984 she made a holy pilgrimage with EFM to Israel and Egypt, and then attended the Oberramagau in Germany. She served on the first board of directors and founders for Limen House for Men. She alone spoke to the Episcopal Diocese beseeching the need for a Limen House for Women. Her pleas were answered unanimously, and the monies were allocated to save more lives with this halfway house. Peggy also assisted in other duties such as meals-on-wheels, vestry member, and served on liaison committees for Sojourners Place, Friendship House, Meeting House, Sunday Breakfast and other community needs. Later in her life she served as Senior Warden at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She worked hand in hand with Sandra Johnson, the Senior Warden at St. Matthew's Church. The two vestries worked together to bring the merger of two churches to fruition.
Peggy enjoyed summers at her beach home with her family. There she loved to fish, and eat steamed crabs, and play bingo. She also loved to play bridge, scrabble, and crosswords. She also loved to have her grandchildren stay with her. Throughout her entire life, her love and generosity never stopped.
Peggy was fundamental in a family restaurant from 1979 to 1981. Later in 1982, she became a competitive ballroom dancer and won many awards. Also, she won Mrs. Senior Delaware of 1991. From 1986 till 2000 Peggy and all her children started a successful family business, Voice Star Systems.
Upon retirement at age 78 she remained at home with her daughter, Peggy, her caregiver and constant companion. After a long struggle with her declining health, her faith always remained strong. We wish to thank Vitas hospice for their care this last year.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Sts. Andrew and Matthew Episcopal Church at 9th and Shipley St. in Wilmington, DE. A reception for family and friends is planned at the church after services.
In lieu of flowers, expressions and donations may be sent to the Margaret L. Scheu Grandchildren's Memorial Fund; Memorial Fund, 124 Matthew Drive, Bear, DE 19701.
