Obituary
In each lifetime, there appear certain people who, through the sheer will of their vivacious personalities, can best be described as characters. They are the individuals who light up the room with their arrival and whose antics bring smiles to the faces of those around them.
On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, the world lost a shining star when Mary Jane Fernandez (nee Distana) died peacefully at home. Mary was born on Christmas Eve 1923 in Wilmington, DE. A first-generation American born to Italian immigrant parents, the late Nicholas and Elvira Infante Distana. Mary was married to the love of her life, George, for 67 years.
Mary retired from Wright and Simon in 1971 after many years of loyal service. She was a member of the Junior Board of St. Francis Hospital for 31 years and a lifelong member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Elsmere, where she especially enjoyed working at their annual carnival. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, cooking and baking (especially her famous pizzelles). She and George exercised at Kirkwood Fitness Club, where they made many dear friends. She was always the life of the party!
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, George, (2010); her son-in-law, William E. Pote; her sister, Matilda Fitzsimmons; and her brothers-in-law, Dan Delcollo and Jim Fitzsimmons, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy A. Pote, of Hockessin; her grandson, Todd A. Pote, and his wife, Brigitte, of Hockessin; her granddaughter, Shannon H. Pote, of Baltimore, MD.; her two great-grandchildren and center of her universe, Brody and Isabella Pote; her sister, Rose Delcollo; and many nieces and nephews who adored their "Zizi Mary."
A special thanks to Vitas Hospice for all the comfort and care they provided.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, December 15, at 11:00 am at Corpus Christi Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere, DE. A visitation will take place at the church on Tuesday morning from 10:00-11:00 am. Entombment will be at Cathedral Cemetery.
