Mary Ann "Mottsey" (Brogan) Kane, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Ann was born and raised in Wilmington. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha (Apel) Brogan. Mottsey cherished her childhood growing up in the parish of St. Elizabeth and was a proud 1955 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. In 1956, Mary Ann married the love of her life, William Kane, and together they spent 44 years of love and laughter raising their family. Mary Ann was a founding member of "The Card Club". This group of friends shared incredibly fun times and were a support for one another through thick and thin.
Mottsey had a zest for life that inspired those around her. Whether she was enjoying time with family out listening to live music, celebrating at her grandchildren's weddings, or sending personalized video messages to her friends and family on their birthday, Mottsey lived life with a flare that was all her own. She was the ultimate matriarch and everything she did was for the love of her family. Her most important calling in life was Mommom and she was happiest with her grandchildren around her.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, William" Bill" Kane, and her son, William "Billy" Kane, Jr.; and her brother, Joseph Brogan.
She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Mary Ann O'Neill (Art) and Patricia Preston (Ben); her son, Michael Kane; and her daughter-in-law and BFF, Ann Kane. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chris O'Neill (Kat), Kelly Raimondo (Joe), Meghan Buckley (Sean), Brittany Freel (Paul), Samantha Kane, Kaitlynn Kane, Erin Kane, Shawn Preston (Emma), Cole Preston, Maggie Budd (Danny), Mandy Kane, Cailah Evans (James), Michael Kane (Taylor), Mary Kate Kane, William Kane, Jack Kane (Katie), Joe Kane, and Brayden Kane; and a baker's dozen of great-grandchildren. Mottsey is also survived by her sister, Eileen Brice; her sisters-in-law, Patricia, Paula, Mary, JoAnn, and Linda Kane, and Gladie Brogan; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A viewing will take place at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, on Thursday, September 10, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth R.
