Mary E. Welcher

Passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born on April 8, 1932 to the late Mary Ann (Murphy) and Bartholomew Collins in Bayonne, NJ. Her three older siblings were born in Cork, Ireland, and the family emigrated to the US in 1930.

Mary married the love of her life, Thomas W. Welcher, on September 11, 1954 in Bayonne, NJ. They moved to Delaware in 1961 and raised two children.

Mary was employed for many years at the University of Delaware, retiring in 1994. She was a dedicated parishioner of Holy Family Church. She served the church as a member of the Altar Society and participated in the Leisure Group. She was a kind and nurturing woman who dedicated herself to family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Welcher in 2000; her sister, Kathleen Strachan; and her brother, Timothy Collins. She is survived by her children, Thomas, and his wife, Tina, of Landenberg, PA, and Kathleen McHale, and her husband, Michael, of Summit, NJ; her grandchildren, Zachary, Becky, Amy, and Jacob Welcher, and Meg, Michael, and Caitlin McHale; her sister Theresa Staton, of Durham, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Somerford House and Seasons Hospice for the loving care of Mary.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 11:30 am at Holy Family R. C. Church, 15 Gender Road, Newark, DE. A viewing will take place at the church from 10:30-11:30 am. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery.
