Matilda H. "Tillie" Gallagher
Age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, 2014.
Tillie was born as Matilda Hondros in Philadelphia on August 2, 1920. She was the daughter of John Hondros and Matilda Gutekunst Hondros, and she grew up in a family of seven children. She graduated from Hallahan Girls High School in 1938. After her education, she worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, through which she met her future husband.
She married Henry E. Gallagher in 1948, and she lived in Wilmington for the next 65 years, raising her family and working for several years at Wilmington Trust Co. She served as a volunteer for many organizations, including St. Francis Hospital, Mary Campbell Center, John G. Leach School, United Cerebral Palsy, Salesianum School, and the Oblates of St. Francis deSales.
For her entire adult life, she was a highly skilled seamstress, specializing in making custom wedding and bridesmaid gowns for more than 100 weddings, as reported in a News-Journal article on her 90th birthday.
Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Gallagher, Sr.; her brothers, John Hondros, Joseph Hondros; and her sisters, Aspa Scheuring, Helen Kaltenbacher Lord, and Katherine Hondros, who died as a young girl.
She is survived by her children Henry E. Gallagher, Jr. (and wife, Geri) of Wilmington, Gerry G. Durisin (and husband George) of Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Karen E. Gallagher of Bear; her grandchildren, Kristin E. Chambers (and husband James), Henry E. Gallagher III, Dana M. Durisin, and Erin E. Durisin; great-grandchildren Jason and Lucas Chambers; her sister, Anne Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family.
Tillie's family members are grateful to Dr. Stephanie Malleus and her staff, and the staffs of Rockland Place and Vitas Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Beloved R. C. Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilmington, DE, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at 10:30 am. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00-10:30 am. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
