Obituary

Matthew U. Smith, Sr.
Age 92 of New Castle

Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2024.

Matthew was born in Pottsville, PA to the late Andrew and Margaret (Bonner)m Smith. He enjoyed his childhood growing up with his three sisters in Buck Run, PA. The family moved to Delaware in Matthew's teenage years. He was a proud 1950 graduate of William Penn High School, where he played football all four years. In 1957, Matthew married the love of his life, Vera Pandolfi. Together they spent 53 years of love raising their family.

Matthew believed in hard work. He spent 30 years as a dedicated employee of Chrysler. Not one to sit still even in retirement, Matthew worked for various security companies including; Pinkerton, Crown Zellerbach, and Ronson, was a custodian for St. Mark's High School, did some home painting, and was always a helpful presence at his son's business, Matthew's Formal Wear.

In his free time, Matthew loved bowling, roller skating, and was the biggest sports fan. He loved to cheer on his Phillies and Eagles. He will be remembered most for his love of family and his uncanny ability to fix anything that was broken.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Vera Smith, in 2010; his sisters, Mary Smith, Betty Kelley, and Margaret Edmenson; and his nephew, Colin Kelley.

Matthew will be dearly missed by his sons, Matthew Smith, Jr. (Barbara) and Andrew Smith; his grandchildren, Ryan Smith (Samantha) and Danielle Smith; and his great grandchildren, Ava, Adam, and Austin. He is also survived by his niece, Betty Rae Ingalls.
