Michael J. McGinnis
"Elgin"
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mike McGinnis, 66, of Houston, TX. Mike died at home on November 27, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born and raised in Wilmington, DE. He graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School in 1965. Mike served honorably in the Vietnam War.
Mike lived in Houston, TX for the past 30 years. For 27 of those years, he worked as day manager of Molly Maguire's Irish Pub before becoming the area manager of all of the 17 Molly's Pubs in the Houston-Galveston area. He will be dearly missed by all of his family, friends, and patrons and anyone who had the good fortune to know him.
Mike could be referred to as a sports expert…on football, baseball, basketball, horses, and golf. He was an avid golfer and darts player and often participated in the many charity tournaments around the Houston areas. Mike could be called on to MC any charity event and did so with panache. He made sure every event was a success for the charity and for everyone participating. His good nature was beloved by all who spent time in his company. He was a rock when you needed one. His good deeds (and more so the modest execution of them) are renowned amongst his friends.
A celebration of Mike's life was held at Molly Maguire's on Saturday, December 14, 2013 with a bagpiper and a friend of Mike's from Ireland playing the piano and singing "Oh Danny Boy" and other Irish favorites.
Mike would travel back to Delaware every year in October to celebrate his mother's birthday, and play in the St. Elizabeth annual golf tournament. On his visits home, he never missed making a stop at his old neighborhood bar, Mulrooney's Irish Pub, or going to the Defiance Athletic Club to reminisce with "The Boys".
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Hugh James "Muggs" McGinnis. He is survived by his mother, Catherine S. McGinnis; his brothers, James, Patrick, Kevin (Geraldine); and his sisters, Maggie Dobrzynski (Buddy), and Cathy (Bill); his former wife, Dena Hinman and daughter Michele; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dena Hinman for taking such good care of Mike throughout his illness.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11 am. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10-11am Saturday morning. Interment is private.
